Nikolai Galen – Summons
Through voice and dance, we can explore our deepest selves; the selves we reveal when we peel away our more civilised layers; where voice and movement connect with our ancestral and mythological spirits and, what might be called in all its contradictoriness, ‘human nature’. And human nature makes for dark times – the devastation of our planet, wars and bigotry – so dark that perhaps we feel unable to respond though we may feel feel summoned to.
Summons is an exploration of some of the possible responses of our selves (our souls if you like) when we look inside for the sources of humankind’s many madnesses.
Some inspirations: Enrique Pardo’s Calling For Pan, a notion of shamanism that is not new age, Jerzy Grotowski’s Poor Theatre, and Butoh dance.
The first performance of Summons was at the Théâtre Dionysos et Apollon, Athens, on Friday, July 1st, 2022. The second will be at Koma, Kadıköy, Istanbul on Sunday, November 13th, 2022.
